Anyone else catch Sean Hayes basically come out (again) last night? Very brave of him to toe the line like that...

'Though it was shut out, "Brokeback" did get a shout out from "Will & Grace" actor Sean Hayes during his acceptance speech for best actor in a TV comedy for his role as the flamboyant Jack McFarland. "First of all, I would like to thank Ang Lee for taking a chance on me," said Hayes, who elicited a chuckle from Lee for his sly jab about the cowboy love story. "I know everyone in Hollywood knows it's such a risk to play a gay character."'

Gamer John Blatzheim, who heard of Andrews' situation, e-mailed Blizzard to express his concern of a double standard that game masters would send her a warning that she could not use "GLBT" as an advertisement to express a safe place for gay gamers after an incident a few months ago where a plague occurred within the game and players yelled in general chat, "Don't get the AIDS!"

PSYOPS: THE WAR, THE MEDIA & YOU

"In this day and age it is impossible to prevent stories that are fed abroad as part of psychological operations propaganda from blowing back into the United States - even though they were directed abroad," says Kristin Adair of the National Security Archive.

Credibility problem

Public awareness of the US military's information operations is low, but it's growing - thanks to some operational clumsiness.

When it describes plans for electronic warfare, or EW, the document takes on an extraordinary tone. It seems to see the internet as being equivalent to an enemy weapons system

Late last year, it emerged that the Pentagon had paid a private company, the Lincoln Group, to plant hundreds of stories in Iraqi newspapers. The stories - all supportive of US policy - were written by military personnel and then placed in Iraqi publications.

And websites that appeared to be information sites on the politics of Africa and the Balkans were found to be run by the Pentagon.

But the true extent of the Pentagon's information operations, how they work, who they're aimed at, and at what point they turn from informing the public to influencing populations, is far from clear.

End Of The World Watch

END OF THE WORLD WATCH:
If the acceleration continues at the current rate, the scientists warn that sea levels could rise during this century by between 28 and 34cm.

Dr John Church, a scientist with the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation based in Tasmania and an author of the study, said that higher sea levels could have grave effects on some areas.

"It means there will be increased flooding of low-lying areas when there are storm surges," he told the Associated Press.

"It means increased coastal erosion on sandy beaches; we're going to see increased flooding on island nations."

There is now a consensus among climate scientists that rising atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide are the major factor behind rising temperatures.

Increased temperatures can lead to higher sea-levels through several mechanisms including the melting of glaciers and thermal expansion of sea water.

Through the 1997 Kyoto protocol, industrialised countries have committed to cut their combined emissions to 5% below 1990 levels by 2008-2012. But the US and Australia have withdrawn from the treaty.

Dr Church urged: ""We do have to reduce our emissions but we also have to recognise climate change is happening, and we have to adapt as well."

Interesting New York Times Book Review: The Romance of Two Black Victorian Writers

The Romance of Two Black Victorian Writers

like Robert and Elizabeth Browning, Paul Laurence Dunbar and his wife, Alice Ruth Moore insisted; like the English poets, they eloped against the wishes of disapproving parents. By the time of their marriage in 1898, Dunbar -- an appealing, dark-skinned dandy of a man -- had been anointed by the reigning critic, William Dean Howells, as the first American Negro to have ''evinced innate distinction in literature.'' Moore, a light-skinned beauty with hazel eyes and auburn hair, had, at the age of 20, published her first volume of writings in 1895, the same year that Dunbar saw her picture in a Boston magazine and fell precipitately in love.

How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.

I love thee to the depth and breadth and height

My soul can reach, when feeling out of sight.

For the ends of Being and ideal Grace.

I love thee to the level of everyday's

Most quiet need, by sun and candle-light.

I love thee freely, as men strive for Right;

I love thee purely, as they turn from Praise.

I love thee with the passion put to use

In my old griefs, and with my childhood's faith,

I love thee with a love I seemed to lose

With my lost saints, I love thee with the breath,

Smiles, tears, of all my life ã and, if God choose,

I shall but love thee better after death

Fatone and Bass previously teamed up for the 2001 romantic comedy, On the Line. Fatone also appeared in My Big Fat Greek Wedding and stage productions of Rent and Little Shop of Horrors.

Bass, meanwhile, spent a good chunk of his post-Sync days attempting to get himself launched into orbit, a quest that was eventually nixed by Russia's space program.

Bin Laden's Truce

Truce offer?!

from the BBC...
Despite the warning of renewed attacks, the speaker also offered the US the chance of a long-term truce in light of the fact that US public opinion polls showed growing opposition to the war in Iraq.

Your president is misinterpreting public opinion polls which show that the vast majority of you support the withdrawal of your forces from Iraq
Voice said to be Bin Laden
"We have no objection to responding to this with a long-term truce based on fair conditions," the speaker said.

"We do not mind offering you a truce that is fair and long-term... so we can build Iraq and Afghanistan... there is no shame in this solution because it prevents wasting of billions of dollars.

"Your president is misinterpreting public opinion polls which show that the vast majority of you support the withdrawal of your forces from Iraq."

White House spokesman Scott McClellan quickly dismissed the truce offer saying: "We do not negotiate with terrorists. We put them out of business".

'Ploy'

US Vice President Dick Cheney said the offer appeared to be a ploy, but that it was too early to draw conclusions.

"I don't think anybody would believe him... It sounds to me like it's some kind of a ploy, but again not having seen the entire text or validated the tape and the timing of it, I'm reluctant to draw any conclusions," Mr Cheney said in an interview with Fox news.

Transphobic reporting from Rolling Stone?

The Mystery of Larry Wachowski by PETER WILKINSON for ROLLING STONE

Overall the piece reads like a well informed look at a famous transsexual. It's not.

J. Michael Bailey, a professor of psychology at Northwestern University and the author of The Man Who Would Be Queen: The Science of Gender-Bending and Transsexualism, is a vocal proponent of the science behind autogynephilia, and although he declined to comment about Larry Wachowski, he did describe typical autogynephilic behaviors. "Autogynephiles frequently mention having a longing to be a girl that begins in childhood," says Bailey. "But the first outward manifestation of it usually crops up in early adolescence, when they discover that it turns them on to wear women's clothing. What you do not see, despite frequent claims to the contrary, is evidence that these folks were notably feminine in childhood." - The Mystery of Larry Wachowski

Wikipedia's entry on J. Michael Bailey:

Northwestern University opened a formal investigation into charges of research misconduct against Bailey, as detailed in a series of articles in the Daily Northwestern and the Chronicle of Higher Education.

In October 2004, as reported in the December 10th 2004 issue of the Chronicle of Higher Education, Bailey resigned from his Chairmanship of the Department of Psychology, following the completion of the investigation and implementation of undisclosed sanctions against him by the University, but still serves as a professor there.

What's with this quote?
Buck Angel cooled his heels at the bar, while his wife and Larry Wachowski took a turn on the dance floor. "When they came over to me, Larry would not look me in the eye," Buck recalls. "In the shoes, he's, like, six foot three, a big, tall drag queen. I tried to talk to Larry, but he wouldn't talk to me. His wig was over his eyes, and I told him, 'Man, you should pull your wig up, because you look like a dude in a dress.'" - The Mystery of Larry Wachowski

Or this one?

But until Larry Wachowski emerges from his self-imposed exile, if he ever does, nobody will know how deeply into his own personal Matrix the director has gone. - The Mystery of Larry Wachowski

Don't the last lines well represent
the stupidity of this article's approach?

Yup, Lesbian: Remember Our Dead

On March 13th, 1964, one of one of the most infamous crimes in American history occurred in the Kew Gardens neighborhood of Queens, New York. At around 3 AM, 28-year-old Catherine "Kitty" Genovese was attacked, sexually assaulted, and murdered as she walked from her parked car. The assault lasted thirty-five minutes and occurred outside of an apartment building where a reported 38 witnesses either heard or saw the attack and did nothing to stop it. A front-page article in the New York Times sparked an avalanche of press and weeks of national soul searching. The case has lived on in plays, musicals, TV dramas -- it even spawned a whole new branch of psychology.

Today the name Kitty Genovese remains synonymous with public apathy, although almost nothing is known of who she actually was. It was not reported in 1964 that Kitty Genovese was a lesbian and that she shared her home in Kew Gardens with her girlfriend, Mary Ann Zielonko. In this piece, the first broadcast interview she has ever granted, Mary Ann remembers Kitty and the time they shared. HEAR IT

THE LOST ONES: Hugh Thompson Jr. My Lai Hero

THE LOST ONES: Hugh Thompson Jr.

My Lai massacre hero dies at 62

Hugh Thompson (left) and Lawrence Colburn being honoured in 1998
It was 30 years before the US military honoured Thompson (left)
Hugh Thompson Jr, a former US military helicopter pilot who helped stop one of the most infamous massacres of the Vietnam War has died, aged 62.

Mr Thompson and his crew came upon US troops killing civilians at the village of My Lai on 16 March 1968.

He put his helicopter down between the soldiers and villagers, ordering his men to shoot their fellow Americans if they attacked the civilians.

"There was no way I could turn my back on them," he later said of the victims.

Mr Thompson, a warrant officer at the time, called in support from other US helicopters, and together they airlifted at least nine Vietnamese civilians - including a wounded boy - to safety.

He returned to headquarters, angrily telling his commanders what he had seen. They ordered soldiers in the area to stop shooting.

But Mr Thompson was shunned for years by fellow soldiers, received death threats, and was once told by a congressman that he was the only American who should be punished over My Lai.

A platoon commander, Lt William Calley, was later court-martialed and sentenced to life in prison for his role in the killings.

President Richard Nixon commuted his sentence to three years' house arrest.

Lobbying

Although the My Lai massacre became one of the best-known atrocities of the war - with journalist Seymour Hersh winning a Pulitzer Prize for reporting on it - little was known about Mr Thompson's actions for decades.

Victims at My Lai

In the 1980s, Clemson University Professor David Egan saw him interviewed in a documentary and began to campaign on his behalf.

He persuaded people including Vietnam-era Secretary of State Dean Rusk to lobby the government to honour the helicopter crew.

Mr Thompson and his colleagues Lawrence Colburn and Glenn Andreotta were awarded the Soldier's Medal, the highest US miltiary award for bravery when not confronting an enemy.

Mr Thompson was close to tears as he accepted the award in 1998 "for all the men who served their country with honour on the battlefields of South-East Asia".

Mr Andreotta's award was posthumous. He was killed in Vietnam less than a month after My Lai.

Mr Colburn was at Mr Thompson's bedside when he died, the Associated Press reported.

Mr Thompson died of cancer. He had been ill for some time and was removed from life support earlier in the week.

Brokeback NOT Bareback: A Photo Essay of sorts

I spent the holidays with my amazingly religious family, including my lil sister Bk who's the most adorable sweetest person ever (she's so nice we're at times unsure how we're related to her, until her disarming charm wraps itself around a wallop of a good intentioned insult).

My family is a film family, over the holidays my mom and sibs watched around 20 movies, going to the theater maybe 4 times as well...in one week people.

I call over to my brother's where my mom and sisters stayed during the holidays,

Me: So what are you watching now?
Mom: Silence of the Lambs, gotta go!

So it runs in the family, the ability to be enveloped in story, that deep love of film.

My sister Bk is over at Baylor, which she told me is more liberal than one would think. I replied it's gotta be more liberal than Bob Jones University. That my sister hadn't heard of Bob Jones made me actually feel reassured she wasn't going to turn into a gay hating religiosity spouting freak. Then I read this.

It did make me ecstatic to hear that Bk shares with others that her sister is Bi and she's proud of me and my work in the Queer community.

My baby sister, now 14, pipes in: "Well, I tell my friends she dates the genderqueers, which we all find very interesting" -- I decide to let that one go for now.

I did get a toolset for Xmas
so maybe my gram's getting my own genderqueerism.

So I'm feeling good about being queer and being in my family...for a moment.

My uncle is visiting from DC, and we get on, but I tend to avoid too much deep conversation, cause all roads lead back to god for him, and the lord goddess for me. But I guess he spoke on the evils of Brokeback Mountain to my siblings.
"There's a reason they call it Brokeback Mountain, those boys break their backs...ya know how, etc"

So this my Bk tells me, as we're deciding to see Memoirs of a Geisha and I'm like

OH HELL NO, WE'RE ABOUT TO SEE BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN!

RIGHT NOW.

LIKE NOW.

I have to cajole, beg and plead for my sis to accompany me to this film, I'm like damn for real? C'mon, there's like 2 mins gay sex tops I tell her.
(hehe, Heth Ledger is the top, and the hottest straight guy playing gay EVER)
I'm like two cute boys, directed by the same guy who did Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and it's winning all these awards etc.

She tells me it's not about the gay, she doesn't like to see movies where people cheat on each other in any fashion.

Watching 2 married men in an affair is not something she wants to see. I concede the point that it's cool not to wish to see adultery, but I try to explain that when one loves but cannot be in love...
marriage often results next.

My sister: But isn't it called Brokeback Mountain for a reason? Why is it called Brokeback Mountain then? Why?
My roommate: No, that's Bareback you're thinking of!
My sister: Bareback?

Looking at the clock and trying to make the movie, I run through heterosexism, closeted behavior being the norm,

and how it's good for the straight community that doesn't hate gay people to support gay films like this.

My sister is like well I certainly don't hate gay people, I love you don't I? She says she's also uncomfortable "seeing that type of love expressed". I was so proud of her for saying it that way, but we sure as hell HAD to see that movie now.

So we went.

The movie starts, about 30 mins in comes the first kiss and then the big sex scene and she starts getting up to go to the bathroom. I pull her back down into the seat, whispering "it won't be that bad". And it wasn't...cause it WAS FUCKING HOT. No other way to say it, but it was sexy and well done...and the acting so intense and frank, you had to let the story come...

So she liked the film in the end, and so did I.

There's talk in the queer community re: the film:
"It's too straight"

In LA Weekly, David Ehrenstein quotes The Dying Gaul, on how the Oscar winning Tom Hanks/Denzel Washington film Philadelphia isn't gay either. "It's about a man who hates gay men" and I so agree!

Though I must remind audiences that Tom Hanks kinda outing his old High School teacher during his Oscar acceptance speech is what led to the film "In/Out" with Kevin Kline...

What do Brokeback Mountain, In/Out, and Philadelphia have in common? In my mind they are the straight re-telling of our stories. In the end this doesn't hurt, it helps. We all wish two lovers will live happily ever after, and the lines that divide become less and less (or so the theory goes).

I found it so interesting that the cultural touchstones of queer cowboys, the rugged jeans hiding the large bulge, the black leather Gyllenhaal takes to wearing in later scenes...gay as the Village people. It's the style expressed a lot in the 70's, when gay culture might have been more out in the straight world than they ever knew. I think that's been a major point in the parallelism of queer culture and the mainstream.

"They don't know who we are, we are them
and I've got the Levi's to prove it"

I embrace this, I'd like to think that any one person who watches Brokeback Mountain will know more of the queer experience.
We're everywhere and we've always been everywhere, under the surface we were forced to live a lie...and many of us chose not to fight, only to love.

GO SEE IT, IT'S WELL WORTH EVERY PENNY!

Ariel, not The Little Mermaid, dying?

The dramatic decline in Sharon's health comes as Sharon runs for re-election on March 28 at the head of a new centrist party, Kadima. He enjoys a wide lead in the polls. The party's strength is centered on Sharon, and if he were forced to step down, Israel's political scene would be thrown into turmoil.

I feel as if we should pray for him, but then I think of the decades of vitriol

Not to mention giving "Ariel" a bad name...

But seriously, I wish him health and continued life. Without redemption, what is left of a story?

Remember how the Bush campaign was big ballin in 2004?

Here's How!

People familiar with the investigation said federal investigators are interested in questioning Abramoff about his dealings with DeLay and Ney as well as other lawmakers and officials. Those include Rep. John Doolittle, R-Calif., Rudy and Sen. Conrad Burns, R-Mont., as well as former deputy Interior Secretary Stephen Griles and former top Bush administration contract officer David Safavian, according to the sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity because Abramoff's information is likely to be submitted to a federal grand jury.

Choose Your Own Adventure: Iraq

Teen runs off to Iraq by himself

By JASON STRAZIUSO
BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) - Maybe it was the time the taxi dumped him at the Iraq-Kuwait border, leaving him alone in the middle of the desert. Or when he drew a crowd at a Baghdad food stand after using an Arabic phrase book to order. Or the moment a Kuwaiti cab driver almost punched him in the face when he balked at the $100 fare.
