The first time I read American Gods I chose to read him as an african american just out of choice. I believe shadow is supposed to have some sort of ambiquity, I think we are supposed to have some sort of control over our own character building in regards to shadow so we can see the world through him and relate. Not many people could relate to Vin Diesel, nor would many want too.
